NFL Social Report Cards: NFC East

The NFC East was one of the more unpredictable divisions this year.  The Giants got off to an unexpected winless start in the first portion of their season and Robert Griffin III suffered a severe sophomore slump that was not helped at all by having to return from a major knee surgery. The Cowboys did what they normally do: play mediocre football with some signs of life but ultimately falling  short of the playoffs. The surprise of the division was the Eagles lead by first year head coach Chip Kelly.  It is safe to say this division did not play out as predicted by most. Social Media Costs Brandon Jacobs Suspension and $167,000 in Lost Pay

49ers running back Brandon Jacobs was suspended for the remainder of the 2012 regular season due to posts on his social media pages A trying year for San Francisco 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs became even more awkward Monday afternoon when head coach Jim Harbaugh suspended him for the final three games of the regular season and presumably for the postseason, should the team qualify.  In a problem that is becoming much more common, Jacobs’ major undoing was his posts on social media accounts where he shared his displeasure about how the 49ers have used him this season.

Brands Anxiously Await NFL Global Expansion

Beth Hirschhorn, the Chief Marketing Officer for Metlife, thinks the next frontier for the NFL is expansion outside of the U.S. and her brand would do anything for more global exposure.  NFL expansion was one of many topics discussed in a one-on-one interview between Hirschhorn and Terry Lefton (SBJ/SBD) earlier this month at the IMG Sports Marketing Symposium.

NFL Upgrades to New Digital Headsets

(AP) Imagine the coach of your NFL team failing to relay the play call to the quarterback on the field because his outdated analog headset is picking up the random signal of nearby airplane pilots. Seems a little farfetched for America’s largest sport to have simple communication problems right? But just ask San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator, Greg Roman, about trying to communicate with his quarterback, Alex Smith, last year. According to Roman, “There was one time when I was doing it and it happened to be on the same frequency as an airline in a certain city and it was a critical situation in the game and all you hear is Southwest pilots talking.”
