This has not been the best few weeks for Sony. News of hacking and cancelation of a major upcoming film have plagued the tech and entertainment giant. Yesterday though, Sony announced a new product concept that is sure to help turn their luck around. This device currently known as “SmartEyeglass Attach” is a clip-on eyewear module aimed at competing with Google Glass.
“By simply attaching it to a pair of fashionable glasses, goggles, sunglasses, or other type of eyewear”, says Sony in their news release, “you can instantly gain access to visual information that adds a level of convenience to your everyday life”.
One of the world’s smallest OLED displays, measuring 0.23 diagonally, helps this device achieve a resolution of 640×400 pixels. A built-in Micro-Optical Unit allows this display to be seen clearly, whether you’re in the bright sunlight or dark indoors. Coming in at only 40 grams, the module doesn’t weigh down your eyewear.
The potential sports applications are endless.
“This will make possible a whole new level of potential ways to use the module that could provide users with even greater convenience,” said Sony, hinting at applications for outdoor sports, action photography, and even factory workers. Outdoor sports will especially benefit from this new technology. Cyclers, golfers, and many others will have hands-free access to valuable information, such as course maps, distances, speed, and more.
While SmartEyeglass Attach is still in concept form, Sony hopes to start production within a year. Wearable smart glass could be a game-changer for sports. Whether you’re looking to lower your handicap on the course or shave time off your bike ride, Sony’s new device could be the answer.
