HoopMetrics Offers Easy Way To Track Stats, Generate Winning Lineups

May 2017 Sports Illustrated article took an insightful deep-dive into the NBA’s “hustle stats.” A closer look at these previously unkept numbers gleaned something important: hustle separates good from great. It therefore comes as no surprise to see names like Draymond Green and Stephen Curry atop the rankings. In case you haven’t been keeping track, both are members of the NBA title-winning Golden State Warriors.

Statistics have become increasingly important in sports — especially basketball. That’s why brothers Luke and Matt Geiger created a modern way to record statistics (and much more) through their app, HoopMetrics.

The initial focus for the app (available for iOS here) was to create a scalable way for semi-pro and college basketball teams to record stats without just pen and paper.

“What you would do is you would download the app, sign up for an account then create your team,” explained Luke, who is CEO of HoopMetrics. “Let’s say if you are running a high school program you can say, ‘OK, I want to start statting my varsity guys team.’ Once you input your players and stuff you can just go to the game screen, start a game, select who your starters are and just say who you’re playing against.”

From here you can follow the game in real-time or on film. When you want to record a stat just tap the area of the floor where it occurred and HoopMetrics will do the rest.

This is the point where the app proves its value to coaches and players. “The primary pull is our lineup suggestions feature,” Luke said.

Based on statistics, the app can tell you who the five best players are to have on the court in a given situation. Have a lead heading into the fourth quarter? HoopMetrics will give you the five players best at preserving a lead based purely on numbers.

There’s a $1.99 monthly fee after a free trial period to use the app.

Along with the lineup suggestion feature, HoopMetrics logs basic individual statistics and now-famous formulas created by Memphis Grizzlies’ VP of Basketball Operations, John Hollinger.

Geiger explained that they are in talks with multiple coaching organizations on potential partnerships for the upcoming season.

They aren’t just basketball guys either, in the Spring of 2018 they will be releasing a HoopMetrics equivalent for baseball.
