Artists Sketch Scenic Images At THE PLAYERS Championship With iPad Pro, Apple Pencil


During this weekends THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass, the PGA TOUR is ditching the traditional pen and paper along with photography for more tech-centric art and drawings.

A foursome of artists is utilizing iPad Pros and Apple Pencils to sketch players themselves, the grounds, spectators and highlight-reel shots including Sergio Garcia’s ace on the 17th hole, which was drawn by artist Evan Sklar.

Jim Conway, who is a middle school art teacher in Morgan Hill, Calif., drew the 16th green at TPC Sawgrass with Procreate, a popular painting app available on iPads.

A 38-second time-lapse illustrates the creative image coming to life stroke by stroke.

We are excited to collaborate with iPad Pro artists as part of the PGA TOUR’s ongoing Studio 18 project to tell the story of THE PLAYERS Championship,” said Ty Votaw, PGA TOUR Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
“We’ve brought two freelance artists, Jim Conway and Evan Sklar, along with two artists from the PGA TOUR’s creative team, Kristian Champagne and Paul Winter, to use their unique artistic styles on Apple’s cutting edge platform to tell the story of this exciting tournament. We strive to develop unique ways to tell the PGA TOUR story and connect to our audience.

A PGA TOUR illustrator, Champagne drew THE PLAYERS Championship trophy at sunrise on iPad Pro as well. Throughout the Championship, the group of artists will continue to highlight shots as they re-invent how to capture art using newer forms of technology.
