Arsenal (Toby Alderweireld) Per Mertesacker is 32 and on the decline; Gabriel is yet to prove a reliable candidate; Rob Holding’s largely untested and far from the finished article; Calum Chambers was chucked out on loan after disappearing from conscious thought. Arsenal have often got it badly wrong at centre-back, but in Alderweireld they’d have a fine defensive partner for Laurent Koscielny or Shkodran Mustafi who’d suit the Gunners’ stylish play to a tee. The Belgian is now arguably the Premier League’s best centre-back – he also packs a punch from attacking set-pieces – and at 27 still has plenty of fine years ahead of him. Chelsea (Ryan Sessegnon) Let’s be blunt: Chelsea don’t really care for their west London rivals all that much, but there’s a Fulham star who perfectly fits the bill for their buy-young-sell-high strategy. God forbid he might even have the potential to step up for first-team duties at Stamford Bridge eventually Attack-minded left-back Sessegnon doesn’t turn 17 until May next year, yet is already a first-team fixture at Craven Cottage having started six of Fulham’s matches this season. He became the Championship’s first Year 2000 goalscorer in another appearance, opening the scoring against Cardiff in August. Unsurprisingly, Arsenal and Manchester City have been linked with a move. Everton (Sadio Mane) The Toffees would happily take a handful of Jurgen Klopp’s first-teamers at Goodison Park, but they’re perhaps most in need of Mané’s jet-heeled contributions out wide. Ronald Koeman brought the Senegalese star to Southampton from RB Salzburg in 2014, and the now-24-year-old did so well on the south coast that Liverpool coughed up £34m for him this summer. Everton are lacking spark in attacking areas – Kevin Mirallas, Aaron Lennon, Gerard Deulofeu and Enner Valencia are hardly what you'd call consistent – and Mané would surely prove the perfect foil for Romelu Lukaku. Liverpool (Idrissa Gueye) Nope, not Lukaku: we all saw how Christian Benteke fared at Anfield under Klopp. And while the former is more mobile and an all-round better player, he’s not the fluid frontman that Liverpool are deploying with so much success right now. Instead, midfield enforcer Gueye made a mightily impressive start to the season in his new surroundings after a torrid debut campaign at Aston Villa, and would surely represent an upgrade on the 29-year-old Lucas. At 27, he’s the right age too. Next page: Mancunians collideManchester City (Luke Shaw) Gael Clichy has done well to retain his first-team place this long, but Shaw would be a fine player to usurp him, all while under a manager who might actually be a bit nicer to him. Shaw’s Southampton upbringing helped prove his worth as a technically proficient Premier League performer when given the first-team chance by Mauricio Pochettino, and before injury it seemed that was set to continue at Old Trafford. In essence: he’s Pep’s kind of player… and just 21 years old too. FUNNYMourinho blames Luke Shaw for Donald Trump victory Manchester United (Kevin De Bruyne) Is he the best player in the Premier League? Sergio Aguero definitely runs him close – and in truth, might just shade the argument – but there’s no question that De Bruyne is the league’s most inventive player who could rejuvenate a tired-looking United side and provide the regular bullets Zlatan Ibrahimovic desires. The best counter-attacking player in the league, De Bruyne’s speed helps him create the kind of space that’s helped him to six assists already this season. Doubtlessly there are many more to come. Tottenham (Alexis Sanchez) Woof indeed. A toss-up between the Chilean and Mesut Ozil, but it’s probably Sanchez who’d have the bigger impact at White Hart Lane. He’s more explosive than Christian Eriksen and would surely relish the fluidity at Spurs, with licence to cut inside and play off a solid striker like Harry Kane. With Victor Wanyama and Mous(s)a Dembele sitting in behind there’d be plenty of scope to express himself – perhaps enough to get him close to the 25 goals he managed in his debut season at Arsenal in 2015/16.
