Yahoo Streams Rio Olympics Thanks To Extended Deal With NBC

With Twitter’s plethora of live streaming deals in recent months (check this link to see them all), it might seem like one of the platforms that took off a year ago has faded to the background—I’m talking of course about Yahoo.

But Yahoo announce an extended digital partnership before the Opening Ceremonies with NBC, allowing them access to all of the content on NBCOlympics.com. This means that Yahoo will get to live stream a number of Olympic events, along with showing video highlights. The announcement came days before they launched their TV watching website, Yahoo View.

“By teaming up with NBC Sports and expanding our long-standing strategic alliance, we are excited to offer our passionate audience a one-click experience to NBC Olympics’ extensive coverage of the Rio Games and live events,” said Phil Lynch, VP of Global Partnerships at Yahoo. “We’re thrilled about the opportunity to build upon our existing alliance with our friends at NBC Sports and can’t wait to watch the Games unfold over the next few weeks.”

This is the fourth year that NBC Sports and Yahoo have worked together on various projects, and the second time that they have been partnered for the Olympics.

NBC Olympics’ coverage involves every single sport in the competition, and 4,500 hours total of live-event streaming. This same content is available on the NBC Sports app, since they are both powered by NBC Sports’ Playmaker Media.

Rick Cordella, Senior VP and General Manager at NBC Sports Digital, called the extended deal a “win-win” for the two digital sites. While the “win” is obvious for Yahoo, in their ability to put one of the most exciting sporting events of the year on their site, NBC also gets to extend their reach.
