Spanish engineering firm Wavegarden has already attempted the seemingly impossible. They heisted the sandy beaches of Hawaii and California to make Austin, Texas a surfing Mecca.

Austin’s NLand Surf Park will be Wavegarden’s first U.S. project. Opening in 2016, it will feature a lagoon the size of nine football fields with wave sizes that fit any level of surfing.

Sadly, this park will not have Wavegarden’s coolest new innovation—illuminated night surfing.

Once Wavegarden finishes its testing of this technology, surfers will not have to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch their waves anymore. The most problematic issue with surfing at night, even with floodlights, is that it is incredibly easy to miscalculate waves. To fix this, Wavegarden has strategically placed colored, underwater lights that let surfers know the texture and scale of waves as they approach.

The best part about all of this, though, is how awesome it looks. The technology is surely whetting surf photographer’s appetites.
