DALLAS – July 12, 2016 – Anyone in the world can now play Topgolf® on the go, whenever they want, in the WGT Golfmobile app. Topgolf, a global leader in sports entertainment, has integrated its social multi-player target-oriented game format with stunning views of its Scottsdale venue to offer a realistic Topgolf experience for players online.
WGT Golf, acquired by Topgolf in January, is the world’s most popular digital golf gaming community, with more than 14 million players worldwide. Players can access the games through desktop, tablet, and iOS and Android apps.
“Offering the Topgolf experience in the WGT Golf app instantly provides millions of players a new avenue to experience and connect with Topgolf,” said Topgolf President of Media and WGT Co-Founder YuChiang Cheng. “It was our goal to build a game that is casual to play yet hard to master and that brings people together to share in a fun experience and make new friends.”
In the Topgolf game on WGT Golf, players chat in real time and play against people from all over the world. Points are scored based on distance and relative position near the targets, with added opportunities for bonus points and challenges. Each game lasts approximately five minutes and allows for up to six players to compete simultaneously and see each other’s shots fly through the air. Weekly leaderboards track player rankings, and more competition modes will be added on a regular basis.
Scottsdale is the first Topgolf venue recreated virtually using WGT’s patented image and terrain-mapping technology. The WGT team laser-scanned the venue down to 3mm accuracy while capturing thousands of ultra-HD photographs to create a true-to-life experience for Topgolf fans.
“Since day one, Topgolf’s imaginative use of technology has created more ways to enjoy the game of golf, and we will continue to evolve where and how people can play the game – both offline and online,” Cheng said.
In the first week since the Topgolf format was added to WGT Golf, more than 400,000 individual games were played and 5.3 million virtual golf balls were hit. Topgolf plans to add new game formats, including new Topgolf challenges, to the WGT Golf platform over time.
