This Fitness App Enables DNA-Based Insights, Food Image Recognition

The Calorie Mama AI app, which allows users to count carioles by simply taking photos of their food, has added the ability to set individualized fitness goals and create nutrition plans based on the user’s genetic makeup.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based health and fitness app company Azumio recently released a new version of its Calorie Mama AI app called Calorie Mama AI: DNA Weight Loss Assistant. The app allows users to make well-informed fitness and nutrition decisions based on genetic predispositions such as potential food intolerances and injury risk factors.

Azumio partnered with the fitness and nutrition-focused DNA and genetic data company Helix in order to enhance the company’s original photo-based calorie intake tracker. Helix sequences the user’s DNA from a saliva sample and then passes on the information to Azumio. Helix’s DNA and genetic data is then interpreted by the fitness and nutrition app company in order to provide the app user with actionable feedback for both nutrition and workouts habits.

Helix’s DNA data gives Calorie Mama AI users the ability to understand what foods and athletic activities will work best based on their body’s genetic makeup. The app allows users to understand their Omega-3 fatty acid needs, ideal cholesterol and iron levels, model saturated fat intake and much more. The genetic information also provides data about the potential risk for Osteoarthritis, stress fractures, ACL injuries as well as other natural muscle type and strength predispositions.

“Our vision for Calorie Mama AI is to usher in the next generation of personal wellness apps that would make healthy living easier than ever before,” Azumio co-founder Tom Xu said in a statement. “By adding genetic insights we provide an additional layer of personalization to ensure that every user receives an experience that is as unique as they are.”

Calorie Mama AI encourages users to track their regular diet and workout habits for roughly a week to establish a proper baseline in order to help bolster the DNA-based feedback.

Once a user takes a photo on the app, Azumio’s Smart Nutrition Analysis Platform API uses deep learning and image classification technology to almost instantly provide caloric information for over 100,000 different foods, packages, and barcodes.

The app then suggests and often gives a few options for what the food or foods are. Once the user confirms the food, the app automatically counts and tracks the calories. Calorie Mama AI can also identify and log cholesterol, fat content, protein, fiber, vitamin C and more.

The Calorie Mama AI app is currently available for iOS devices, with an Android app in the works. The basic food photo app is available for free.

The Helix DNA-based version of Calorie Mama AI costs $99.99 for a one-year subscription. Helix’s DNA sequencing costs $80 total. People who have already had their DNA sequenced by Helix can transfer that information to a Calorie Mama AI plan. A non-discounted package is available for $179.99.
