Talking Sports and Technology with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

The NFL, like any other major sports league in the United States, is trying to jump to the forefront of sports-tech integration. How can these leagues best utilize new technologies to benefit players, coaches, administrators and fans?

James Grundvig, CEO/Founder of CloudNician LLC and contributor to Huffington Post, recently sat down with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to talk about how technological advancements are benefiting the league.

One thing the NFL is focusing on is expanding its audience globally. Goodell said one of the ways the league is reaching its international supporters is through NFL Game Pass.

“NFL Game Pass is like selling the DirectTV packages of live game feeds abroad to the international football fans,” he said in the interview. “NFL Game Pass is doing really well.”

The pass allows viewers to watch replays of a variety of games from the season, depending on the package the fan is paying for. The NFL offers basic monthly packages, team passes that allow you to focus on just one team, a season pass and a season plus pass, which allows viewers to watch any game from the past three years and gives them access to playoff and offseason coverage.

To fans in the United States, the league is offering a variety of packages to watch game replays in similar ways, but they’re putting an emphasis on fantasy football.

“The NFL this season will be selling video packages to fantasy football fans, who want to review or watch live digital feeds of the games to track their players,” Goodell told Grundvig. “The NFL is also selling the Coaches’ Tapes as part of NFL Game Rewind to the fans for real in-depth view of the game.”

Through the use of technology, the NFL is finding new ways for fans to access the game. These video packages give every football fan the ability to be watching the NFL any day of the week, which will open up new revenue streams.
