A few of the shared interests between San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence and his wife, Alexis, are gaming, comics, esports and coffee. Together, they’re combining their passions into a one-stop-shop called Coral Sword: Coffee, Comics & Games in Houston.
The unique gaming hub, creative cafe and new media space — which will open in September — will include indie board games, curated comics and speciality coffee and tea.
“Coffee and gaming are two of my favorite off the field activities,” Pence said in a statement. “I’m most excited about creating a space that combines the two. Incorporating new media into the coffee shop is an exciting way for me to bring a piece of San Francisco to Houston that keeps me feeling connected.”

The Pences, who reside in Houston during the offseason, partnered with David Buehrer of Greenway Coffee Company, Ming Chen, star of Comic Book Men, and barista/gamer Sanford Bledsoe III to open Coral Sword: CCG, which will be located two miles from the University of Houston. Just recently, both Hunter and Alexis appeared on the #AskGaryVee video show with Gary Vaynerchuk, founder of digital agency VaynerMedia, where they alluded to opening a gaming coffee shop in the near future. Now, the news is official.
Patrons of CCG will have access to newly released games in addition to being able to stream or set up a podcast in a unique podcast booth. Additionally, a membership co-gaming space will be available to more serious and hardcore players while they’ll also have the ability to rent it out for events, tournaments and workshops.
