The five-time Champion San Antonio Spurs will see some noticeable changes this season to the Bexar County-owned AT&T Center. In a partnership with Musco, which has focused on lighting design and technology for professional sports venues, improvements to the arena will enhance the experience of fans, players and even broadcasters.
Musco has previous experience working on projects with several notable professional and collegiate teams such as the Wells Fargo Arena home to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Palace of Auburn Hills home to the Detroit Pistons, and NRG Stadium where the Houston Texans play. The company has also worked on other large scale projects such as San Francisco’s Bay Bridge.
The project entails installation of over 40,000 LED optics and 200 advanced luminaries at a cost totaling $102 million, which will not only improve the lighting environment of the arena, but will also help reduce their overall consumption by nearly 80%, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
Lori Warren, senior vice president of corporate finance for Spurs Sports & Entertainment also told the Business Journal that technological enhancements “are an important focal point of this renovation project.”
Along with improvement to the main video board and audio system, the arena will also see an increase of Wi-Fi coverage to 90%, according to the project site.
Renderings of the project improvement and expansion can be seen at the new AT&T Center site which will see upgrades for the first time in the 12-year-old arena’s history. Renovations will also include creating 14 new theater boxes and private dining areas, along with new retail spaces for businesses like local fast food chain Whataburger and an updated Fan Shop.
Look for these changes to be unveiled by tip off of the 2015-16 NBA Season as the Spurs begin their quest for a 6th NBA title.
