The tech world has worked to earn your trust via mobile portals on the biggest Sunday of the year. This week, we’re looking to determine if the Super Bowl has done the same, offering a review of the official NFL mobile apps specifically developed and/or updated for Super Bowl XLVIII. Our focus today is the NFL 2014 Live Wallpaper.

One quick note of clarification: there are three particular apps removed from our review this week, including NFL Mobile (the official league app, a known commodity and source of news for football fans updated accordingly), NFL Pick ‘Em (a traditional game of choice sports fans during the regular season, leaving one more game to pick), and the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee Volunteers app (a special application designed by enterprise superfirm SAP AG in support of the league’s volunteers working the event… though we’re betting, based on SAP’s reputation, its outstanding).

Developer: Cellfish Studios
Function: Sports
iOS: Not Available
Android: Available

It is a small and simple app, but it is the only Android-specific offering for mobile lovers on the NFL menu and, to be frank, its as worthy of positive review as any app available for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Live wallpapers offer interactive animations with updated news and information users can view without opening an app or visiting a link. This particular wallpaper includes a clock widget offering real-time score updates, game countdowns, and game weather conditions. Sound includes real NFL announcers who introduce updates in true game lingo while the stadium graphics will replicate and display the true weather and daylight conditions at the game.

Twitter feeds are displayed via in-stadium billboard animations in team colors, users can view weekly stats and facts with a full menu of sharing functions, and settings also open a world of SMS and Gmail alert options to help users organize alerts.

To top off the Android festivities, users can also share pics with friends and followers that display on the stadium billboards, giving the fan at home an interactive outlet to share their pride in the team.

The app is free to download and gives users one free NFL-themed live wallpaper. The cost from this point might be our only complaint: $4.99 to upgrade to your favorite team, $8.99 to get it all.

Users can also subscribe for $0.99 per month and receive special updates for the holidays and events such as the Super Bowl… and that’s a deal we can endorse. The team at Cellfish has done a fantastic job, the app continues to evolve and improve, and the downloads and positive reviews have followed as a result.

It may not be as fulfilling as watching the game, but this live wallpaper is a simple and entertaining complement for the second screen junkie who loves to support the team and engage with friends during the big game.
