These days the market for a portable speaker seems very congested, but often a speaker that looks good in the store ends up not living up to the billing after a few weeks in your home.

The TYLT Tunz Bluetooth portable speaker is not one of those speakers.

TYLT was nice enough to send a copy of this speaker to SportTechie and we were able to “test drive” and see just how much capability this speaker has.

The first thing that stood out was just how punch this speaker packed in such a small device. The speaker weighs just 13 oz, but when in use sounds like a large stereo that you would expect to be large and far from portable like this speaker is.

It has been widely seen over the past year to 18 months that the  Bluetooth speaker category has been infiltrated with man new entries recently. There have been many innovative designs out there but I was drawn to the Tunz design due to its small size and numerous capabilities. It has a twin active/one passive driver system  similar to Jawbone’s Jambox. Tylt’s new Tunz, which retails for $150 (pronounced Tunes) provides a different look then its competition itself by including three Y-shaped rubber bands that can be swapped to change the accent color. This give the device a different look and feel each time you use it and can be used in different settings in different arrangements.

It also contains a 2800mAh rechargeable battery that runs for 20 hours on 50% volume. It also enables the user to be able to recharge an iPod or iPhone at full speed should you supply a cable. Tunz also supports Bluetooth 3.0, which enables very quick pairing and re-pairing, and also includes a microphone for speakerphone functionality.

As seen above, the Tunz speaker is barely larger then the size of your hand (Slash Gear)

Tunz is 1.5” narrower than Jambox from side to side, and also 0.5” taller and deeper; both are well-suited for portability. The material the product is made of are very similar as well as most of Tunz’ outer design is  a soft touch rubber-coated plastic, except for the grill. This of course is metal with a diamond pattern across the entire front of the device. The device overall is very compact and extremely well-built.

There is absolutely no wasted space in the design and it is completely portable due to its incredible lightweight. It can fit in a bag our purse or even . The bands can easily be taken on and off, allowing the user to personalize and not requiring buying a whole new speaker. Additionally, the bands angle the accessory slightly upwards, which is attractive look. There is no difference in performance when the bands are on the speaker or when they are off the device, but it certainly looks better with the bands on.

Overall, the speaker provides a great experience and the Tunz speaker is very attractive. It has numerous features that many don’t offer and as the market gets congested with many models a tad cheaper, it is nice to get a high quality model for $150. The weatherproof boomBottle offers lots of value for your money and it outperforms most other speakers I have seen for around the same price. For simple music playback, though, Tunz is a good choice. My personal advice would be to obviously consider the numerous options in this price range, and go with the one that has the sonic, speakerphone, battery, and aesthetic characteristics that best suit your personal needs.

This device to me is the Tunz. It has a very reasonable price for what it provides you and can do a number of thing with all your “smart” devices. The sound is excellent and it is a very attractive and portable speaker.

The SportTechie team came away very impressed with the Tylt Tunz Bluetooth speaker! It can be purchased here.
