Oath Expands Mobile Content With Three New Yahoo Sports Shows

Three new original shows are coming to the Yahoo Sports app.

Oath, Verizon’s media content engine powered by the AOL and Yahoo brands, announced this week that it is adding 10 new shows, including three Yahoo Sports shows, to its slate of mobile content.

The sports-related content will be hosted by retired athletes, including two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion Abby Wambach and Arizona Cardinals safety-turned-comedian Jared Quay. There will also be a third show, dubbed “The Spin,” that will offer daily sports reporting and in-depth analysis for fans.

Quay’s show, called “The Rush,” will bring viewers must-see highlights in a daily show that will publish weekday mornings. The show promises to feature a rolodex of athletes and celebrities.

“Soccer Mom” will be a six-part series featuring Wambach interviewing other sports stars about the challenges of balancing parenting with being an elite athlete. Oath promises to deliver a “captivating and intimate” series with guests who have “experienced greatness as athletes from childhood onward and how now they must find balance as others, fathers and caregivers.”

Oath also revealed that it is working with the LeBron James Family Foundation to produce a documentary about the foundation’s I PROMISE school in Akron, Ohio.

The announcements were made during Oath’s presentation at the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IBA) weeklong pitchfest in New York City, called NewFronts, that connects media companies with advertisers. The media giant also said that it would be teaming up with Samsung Electronics to deliver Oath content for free to Galaxy devices. That makes Oath the premiere content partner on Samsung’s Bixby Home in the U.S., with plans to expand across Samsung’s global markets later this year.

In addition to the new sports content, Bixby will include other Oath shows, such as Oath’s “Build Series” in which devotees chat face-to-face with celebrities, as well as sports scores and live coverage of NFL, NBA, and other sports that are streamed through the Yahoo Sports app.

Oath’s massive ad network will be shared across the Samsung network, meaning that advertisements will appear on Yahoo Sports content whether fans are tuning in directly to the app or through Bixby.

At the IBA’s NewFronts event, media companies demonstrated that they are aggressively adding new mobile sports content to engage fans who have snipped the cable cord.

In addition to Oath’s three new sports shows, other major announcements to come out of the upfronts this week include a content partnership between Disney and Twitter, two new YouTube Originals featuring former NBA player Jay Williams and LeBron James, and new content from ESPN.
