NBA Star Steph Curry Relaunches YouTube Channel After Hiatus

NBA Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Steph Curry is relaunching his YouTube channel after a four-year hiatus with a new web series called 5 Minutes From Home.

In a trailer video posted to his account on Wednesday, Curry said the short-form show, which begins May 1, will include interviews with a revolving set of surprise guests, filmed from the leather seats of a moving Sprinter van as Curry takes them from a Warriors game at Oracle Arena to get a late-night bite to eat.

The interviews will cover a range of topics, from life and parenting to sports, business, music and politics. Some of the first confirmed guests on the show include social media personalities Rudy Mancuso and Jesse Wellens, music artist Nipsey Hussle, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and three student basketball players from Oakland’s McClymonds High School.

While Curry has been busy off the court with investments in tech and building followings on other social media sites, he hasn’t posted a video to YouTube since March 2014. His previous videos included content created for his website StephenCurry30.com, which is currently under construction, as well as recap videos from fan meetups and youth skills camps.

He also posted two Day in the Life videos in 2013 that gave an inside look at his family life and game prep with his team.

His following on YouTube is but a fraction of his following on other social media sites. Curry currently has 228,000 YouTube subscribers, compared with 20 million followers on Instagram, 12.5 million on Twitter, 8.1 million on Facebook.

Curry’s YouTube relaunch marks yet another effort to expand the basketball player’s off-the-court skill set, which has taken him into the worlds of Silicon Valley investing and content creation

The two-time NBA MVP first dabbled in tech investing a few years ago when he acquired a small stake in Pinterest. Since then, he’s gone on to play an integral role in athlete-based tech investing, co-founding  Slyce, a social media platform for influencers, and co-hosting the inaugural Players Technology Summit with teammate Andre Iguodala last summer to help other pros navigate the world of tech investing.

With his YouTube relaunch, Curry will take a more professional approach to content creation, adopting a focused storyline and well-produced series that will differentiate his web series from other amateur selfie-style content posted by athletes on sites such as Instagram.

As athletes have worked to build their personal brands through social media, many have taken to YouTube and other streaming sites with professional-style broadcasts. Iguodala, for example, announced last summer a new web series on Cheddar called Evenings with Andre, which dissects business, tech, sports and entertainment topics through a series of celebrity interviews.
