Just days before a highly anticipated Finals rematch from last year tips off between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, the NBA has announced a partnership with Under Armour to launch its first fitness app.
The app is called the NBA FIT App and it is already available for download on the App Store and Google Play. For Under Armour, this is their first partner app for their connected fitness platform which is centered around UA Record, a digital health and fitness community that has over 170 million members in total acrosss UA Record, MapMyFitness, Endomondo and MyFitnessPal.
The NBA FIT App will combine the Under Armour Connected Fitness community with the NBA’s resources to make the only fitness app in any app store to have training and tips videos from NBA and WNBA players and strength and conditioning coaches. Additionally, Under Armour’s blog will supplement the NBA content with fitness, activity and health info.
“We continually look for ways to connect with our fans and encourage healthy, active lifestyles,” said NBA Senior Vice President, Social Responsibility, Todd Jacobson in a press release. “Through this partnership, we are able to combine Under Armour’s connected fitness expertise with the league’s fitness knowledge to create an experience that inspires people to be active, eat healthy and play together.”
“Our partnership with the NBA on the NBA FIT App demonstrates our shared commitment to making all athletes better through the power of social health and fitness experiences,” said Peter Murray, VP Global Sports Marketing at Under Armour. “We are committed to continuing our work together in fostering the worldwide growth of basketball and inspiring a community of users through various challenges, training tips and exclusive content.”

Content in the app will focus on NBA FIT’s main initiatvies: Be Active, Eat Healthy and Play Together. With workouts and nutrition catered to the game of basketball, the NBA FIT App will create an ecosystem with UA Record to allow fans to compete against each other with their workouts and overall health. To jumpstart usage of the new app, the NBA has launched a challenge called NBA Finals 2016 Challenge, which will aim to entice users to perform a basketball workout every day from today until June 19th.
From an Under Armour business perspective, this partnership makes a lot of sense for the growing apparel company. As they move further into the digital fitness space with their UA Record platform, it is easy to envision how this deal with the NBA can help grow their user base and be replicated with other leagues who also want to include their sport-specific workouts, nutrition and ecosystem.
