GE Healthcare and the National Basketball Association announced a partnership to promote both orthopedic and sports medicine research to benefit the health of all basketball players, whether amateur or professional. The partnership will primarily focus on the joint health of NBA athletes, and how detrimental fatigue is to the body. Furthermore, this partnership is centered on wellness research and the methods that can help decrease injuries, which will in turn hopefully increase the longevity of careers for many NBA athletes.

The collaboration between GE Healthcare and the NBA will also involve reputable affiliates of both companies including Adidas, Under Armour, Nike, and Kaiser Permanente. All companies are reportedly providing a committed backing to propel this campaign for wellness research in order to ensure the well being of NBA Athletes.

“NBA players are among the best athletes in the world, and their well-being is the league’s highest priority. Our support for medical research through our partnership with GE Healthcare will help us improve the long-term health and wellness of NBA players. We are also excited that this research collaboration will provide important insights to athletes at all levels,” stated NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver.

This collaboration will see GE Healthcare provide a strategic advisory board that will be made up of countrywide GE physicians and clinical observers who specialize in fields such as sports medicine, radiology, and orthopedics. The leader of this strategic board will be Dr. John DiFiori the Sports Medicine Director for the NBA.

With this partnership real question is will this research help the longevity of the modern day NBA athlete’s career? When watching this past NBA season, the league was bombarded by the injury bug. Even the finals were somewhat disgruntled because of injuries to key players. Here’s hoping this research is effective in keeping players on the court at a higher rate.
