Swiss luxury watch company Longines launched the Longines Live Alpine Data system this week at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championship in St. Moritz.
The Longines Live Alpine Data system consists of a chip attached to the back of the skier’s boot equipped with a radar, motion sensor and accelerometer. It will give real-time and continuous measurements of the athlete’s speed, acceleration and deceleration, the time it takes to reach 100km/h and an analysis of jumps.

The data will be shown in the form of TV graphics for viewers at home and to spectators at the competitions. It can then be used by the athletes after the competition to help them analyze their performance.
“Longines is a pioneer in sports timekeeping, and innovation has always been the driving force behind its known-how, just like for its timepieces,” Longines Timing CEO Alain Zobrist said in a statement. “The Longines Live Alpine Data system is the result of a close collaboration between not only Longines and the FIS, but also the athletes, the trainers, and the TV broadcaster representatives, who were actively involved in its development. The World Championships are the perfect occasion to inaugurate this new system, which will improve the understanding of alpine skiing in general.”
