GPS Technology for a long time didn’t make its way around sports teams or venues. But now tracking systems seem to be populating all over sporting venues and teams. We previously covered SportVU, who recently inked a deal with the entire NBA as well as deals with college basketball programs Duke and Marquette. We also saw the brand new huge scoreboard at Texas Motor Speedway not too long ago.
Location Based Technologies, Inc., is now taking this technology over to NASCAR. They are the  makers of the PocketFinder, which are  personal GPS devices. The deal, which was announced in mid-October has formally started the company’s NASCAR debut with Rick Ware Racing. The deal is for the remainder of the 2013 racing season in both the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for select events.
It also signals that there is legitimately interest around NASCAR for bringing this technology back for the 2014 racing season which begins February 15th at Daytona.

“NASCAR and Rick Ware Racing bring the best of racing and driver safety to its fans. LBT is excited to bring the world’s best personal and vehicle GPS tracking systems to racing fans around the world – for their added safety and security.”

The first race where this technology took place was October 19th in Talladega, Alabama at Talladega Speedway. The PocketFinder team and race equipment will be branded specifically with PocketFinder paint scheme from bumper to bumper. The team will compete in the NASCAR Nationwide and Truck series with races leading up to the acclaimed championship weekend in Homestead Miami. The team also is set to participate in additional races include; Martinsville, Virginia; Phoenix, Arizona; and Miami, Florida.

“NASCAR and Rick Ware Racing bring the best of racing and driver safety to its fans. LBT is excited to bring the world’s best personal and vehicle GPS tracking systems to racing fans around the world – for their added safety and security,” said Dave Morse, CEO of Location Based Technologies.

Drivers will be announced prior to each race event, and will carry PocketFinder’s “personal tracking” device with them throughout the pre-race week and in their actual driver’s suit during the race weekends.

Location Based Technologies, which is a publicly traded company designs and builds dedicated GPS products and services that are designed to be affordable, and easy to use. The company’s consumer products are sold under the PocketFinder brand, and its commercial products are sold under the LBT brand. Rick Ware stated:

“We are excited to be working with LBT and PocketFinder to introduce their GPS tracking technology and brand to the great NASCAR fans across North America. We are going to be bringing back some former Champions and great drivers from the sport in both NASCAR and the United Sports Car Series to be part of this racing effort going forward.”

This is just NASCAR’s latest dive into the world of social media and technology. It has been one of the more aggressive sporting leagues in adapting new ways promote the sport to fans as well as enhance safety and efficiency throughout the racing teams. The Location Based Technological GPS devices are another step in the right direction and it will be interesting to see if they bring the technology back for the 2014 racing season.

We will certainly be monitoring and seeing how this initiative goes.
