Veteran Sports Scientists and Practitioners Gary McCoy and Andy Shelton Join Sports Technology Startup

Menlo Park, Calif., November 18, 2015 – Kitman Labs, Silicon Valley’s leading sports science technology company, today announced a number of key hires that further positions the company as a category leader in helping teams prevent sports injuries. Gary McCoy of Catapult Sports has been named Senior Director of Sports Science and Performance, and Andy Shelton of Leicester Tigers has been named Applied Sports Scientist.

The appointments are effective immediately and reflect Kitman Labs’ ongoing strategy to expand its services in the U.S. while raising awareness for the company’s unique data-driven technology in helping teams prevent injuries. Kitman’s clients include such teams as the Detroit Pistons, Miami Dolphins and the Irish National Rugby Team.

“The combination of science and data is fundamentally changing the way teams think about sports,” said Stephen Smith, CEO and Founder of Kitman Labs. “Gary and Andy have both distinguished themselves as innovative leaders with creative minds that understand the complexities of injury prevention. I’m confident that they will both play a vital role in optimizing mindshare for Kitman Labs as we scale our services in the U.S.”

As Kitman Labs’ Senior Director of Sports Science and Performance, McCoy will lead the company’s efforts to enable its customers to gain the most from the system. He will also work closely with customers and partners to ensure the product continues to support Kitman customers’ continued evolution of athlete performance. Prior to joining Kitman Labs, Gary led the sports science initiatives at Catapult Sports, accounting for almost 5000 percent growth, helping the company become the preferred wearable GPS device worn by athletes on more than 700 teams globally. McCoy is also a 25-year veteran in the field of strength, conditioning and athlete performance, having worked with the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Australian Baseball Federation and the National Football League.

“As a sports scientist for 25 years, I’ve had the glaring realization that it’s never one thing when it comes to athlete injury – it’s a combination of factors,” said McCoy. “The athlete is a complex moving system, and Kitman Labs’ quest mirrors mine: simply, the evolution of athlete performance. For this reason, the opportunity to contribute with like minds is very exciting.”

As Kitman Labs’ Applied Sports Scientist,

Shelton will be responsible for working with teams to ensure the Kitman system is providing the most possible value to Kitman’s largest asset: its customers. Most recently, Shelton served as the Head of Sports Science with Leicester Tigers where he enhanced team performance through the application of advanced sport science techniques and collaboration with other departments. While at Leicester, Shelton partnered with IBM to pioneer the usage of statistical analysis software-based injury reduction strategies, and is considered an expert in the space.

“I am hugely excited to be part of a performance department which has so many years of experience working with elite athletes and coaches at the highest level,” said Shelton. “I am especially looking forward to imparting the knowledge I have gained from my experience in professional sport to practitioners across the United States, and to helping establish Kitman Labs as the world’s preeminent company in empowering elite teams to win.”
