(Washington D.C., November 4, 2015)– Recognizing that fitness marketing can lead to negative effects on perception of body images, upace, a Florida-based fitness software company, is being joined by over 15 universities and NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation to promote Body Positivity as part of National Doughnut Day.
NIRSA is a leader in higher education and champion for the advancement of recreation, sport, and wellness. Since its foundation in 1950, NIRSA membership has grown to comprise nearly 4,500 dedicated professionals, students, and associates, serving an estimated 8.1 million students on more than 900 campuses across North America. NIRSA and dozens of recreation centers will be participating by promoting loving your body through activities that range from information tables to posting on social media to engage users to find their fitness pace.
Research has shown that fitness marketing can lead to negative effects on perception of body images. For example, the “ideal” fitness men should have huge mass and muscles, while the “ideal” fitness women should be very lean and tone. This can lead to eating disorders and compulsive fitness activity. However, to combat the typical fitness ads we are promoting that students should find their own healthy balance that works for them.
“Eating doughnuts is not the traditional way to celebrate fitness and wellness” said Rachel Koretsky, founder of upace. “Which is exactly why we chose this day to promote body positivity. It is about being comfortable in your own skin and doing what is best for you, which may mean eating a donut now and then.”
Join Rutgers University, Raw Athletics, Rider University, University of Tennessee, and more by participating in any of the following ways:
1. Engage with us on social media @upaceapp through liking, sharing, retweeting, favoriting on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram
2. Post on social media about why you love your body or a phrase with the word DONUT
3. Take a picture with staff or members with a sign about why they love their body
4. Grab some donuts and take some silly pictures with them
upace is a management mobile and online app to help individuals find the optimal time and resources to live a healthier lifestyle. The software will allow the university to analyze data that will assist in meeting campus needs.
