GoPro Is Now Collaborating With Periscope To Bring Extreme Sports To Everyone

Earlier this week it was announced that Periscope, Twitter’s standalone live streaming app, and GoPro, who provide versatile, rugged cameras will begin an intriguing collaboration. It is hoped that this will open up new opportunities for real-time video sharing, allowing adrenaline junkies to quickly broadcast their daring exploits to thousands of followers on Periscope in a matter of moments.

GoPro users will now be able to connect with Periscope via WiFi, open Periscope on their iPhone, press broadcast and circulate real-time coverage of their extreme ventures. Whether it be skydiving, snowboarding or mountain-biking, all of this will be available with just a few clicks. Indeed, it is the simplicity that marks out this partnership as one with vast potential.

Both companies have enjoyed healthy success in recent times, and so it is no surprise their collective interests have met. GoPro’s versatile cameras have raced to the very forefront of action-videography since their beginnings in 2002, whilst Periscope gained over 10 million users in its first four months in 2015. Periscope continues to grow, and has even recently been used by German reporter Paul Ronzheimer in his coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis.

In the sports world, and perhaps unsurprisingly, action sports athletes will be the most excited about this collaboration. Air, land or sea, GoPro continues to surpass other technology in capturing extreme, and often amazing, action sports moments. Whereas other sports have had the privilege of live, real-time coverage to the masses, action sports have not had such opportunities. The potential for extreme sports coverage is therefore huge, and will be put into place for tomorrow’s X-games in Aspen, Colorado. Tony Bates, GoPro’s CEO, reinforces this, talking up the ‘great, real-time platform’ that Periscope offers and the ‘immersive’ content his cameras can capture.

The opportunities this partnership presents are tremendous for both parties, but are perhaps even more exciting for those with a love for action sports. For both those broadcasting their stunts, and those watching, this has incredible potential.
