Former Twitter Exec Launches Mental Training App For Athletes

“Mind right, game tight” is the motto of a new mental training app called Lucid that is geared specifically for athletes. Lucid is the creation of Jason Stirman who is a former Twitter and Medium executive. Stirman wanted to create something for athletes to prepare for a game, “Kobe says he owes 80 percent of his performance to mental training,” said Stirman.

When users log into the app they can create goals and pick a coach to help them reach their goals. The coaches range from pro athletes like Aaron Gordon, to coaches that actually help pro athletes meditate and train.

Meditation has become more and more popular among athletes. Some include Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Derek Jeter, and Olympians Misty May- Trainor and Kerri Walsh. “Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what you visualize and what you experience so athletes for decades have been visualizing before they go out on that court or the field or the pool,” said Stirman.

According to Lucid’s blog, the goal of the product is to allow athletes of all ages to use mental life skills to improve their game. Their blog boasts numerous articles about how athletes have used mindfulness and meditation to keep them grounded and help the perform at a higher level.Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 9.50.49 AM

Stirman wants the training available on the app to mirror the training that athletes like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant receive, but at a much lower cost. The app is free in the App Store, but users must pay for a subscription, theoretically a lower cost then having an in person trainer like the pros, at a yearly cost of $100.
