In another interesting development in the collision between virtual reality technology and sports, former NFL lineman Akim Millington has been announced as Next Galaxy Corp’s newest director of Virtual Reality for Sports and Entertainment.

Akim was a high school all-American athlete in both track and football, and was even recognized as a top high school recruit in Illinois. After high school, Akim engaged in a collegiate career playing football for the Oklahoma Sooners, and then eventually played professionally for the New Orleans Saints. But he is not only experienced in sports, he is also technologically savvy. In fact, he is the founder of Centi Athletics; a company that creates mobile devices that are wearable for the consumer.

“Once in a lifetime, you get the opportunity to revolutionize the way we do things – and this is one of those moments – working alongside groundbreaking VR pioneers at Next Galaxy, I feel as though I am on a Super Bowl caliber team. VR Sports is as close as you can get without being on the field. From the roar of the fans to the jaw breaking hits, VR coverage makes game day as real as it gets. Just add the face paint,” adds Millington.

Millington’s work with Next Galaxy will largely center around a partnership with Great American Rivalry, a documentary series that solely focuses on Friday night high school football. The two will aim to create a virtual reality broadcast of Friday night high school football that will be widely distributed throughout the nation and around the world via Great American Rivalry’s channels.

Each year Great American Rivalry selects top schools across the country to participate in their Rivalry Series. Now, with the help of Millington and Next Galaxy, these top high school football games will be available in virtual reality.
