Tossing and turning in bed and not being able to sleep can be frustrating for anyone. However, it can be even more frustrating as an athlete. The amount and quality of sleep athletes get is important in relation to their health, recovery, and overall performance.
While these are considered key components to an athlete’s performance, not much attention has been given to what can be done to improve sports stars’ sleep from an equipment standpoint.
The Dallas Mavericks have recently partnered with Bedgear, a performance bedding company in order to see the effect of what sleeping can do for their players.
While Bedgear has already partnered with the Denver Broncos and Boston Red Sox, the Mavericks are the first NBA team to partner with the company.
“We are always looking for innovators that will help enhance the Mavs; performance — whether its’s physical, mental or some combination of both,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in a statement. “Sleep is such an important part of an athlete’s life, especially when we travel and have back-to-back games, and I’m excited to see how the guys react to the products and program.”

Bedgear will be working with each athlete and coach individually to provide them with a personalized sleep system. This system includes engineered fabrics and textiles that keep pillows at a cool temperature, fabrics that eliminate moisture and a pillow that fits their sleeping position and body frame.
For each different person the pillow will vary in size, thickness, fluffiness and firmness. They will be assigned certain pillows based on if they sleep on their back, side or stomach.
The idea of the system is to have you sleep in the same position for hours on end. If your body is not comfortable in the position that you are laying in, you will feel the negative side effects the next day.
In addition to providing equipment for the Mavericks, Bedgear will also provide exclusive offers to Mavericks season ticket holders and promotions in the area.
“We believe that quality sleep is vital to not only the players and coaches but, also to all Mavs followers and fans,” Founder and CEO of Bedgear, Eugene Alletto said in a statement. “Whether you are an all-star athlete, fireman, parents or school teacher, sleep is a fundamental part of life… We are excited to partner with organizations such as Mark’s who share our vision for bringing a focus on achieving more to one of the three essentials of life – water, food and sleep.”
