The NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers recently announced plans to incorporate some spiffy technology to the basketball court this upcoming season. The new tech, an “Ultra-High 3D” on-court image projection system, will help to enhance the fan experience. The Cavaliers organization invested in Quince Imaging’s new projection image-mapping technology, which was first unveiled last March for Cavalier great Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ jersey retirement ceremony.

The Cavaliers will use the technology to transform the court into a canvas that displays high-impact 3D projections. Using a combination of 3D mapping techniques and visual media content from the Cavaliers, Quince Imaging’s technology created an immersive video environment for fans with the court surface and surrounding video screens. The projection system, comprised of 16 HD projectors, Pandoras Box version 5.5 and Warper, align the video content to the graphic design elements of the Quicken Loans Arena court.

“We’ll continue to push the limits and brainstorm new creative, fun ways to use this technology to amplify an already incredible fan experience,” Tracy Marek, Chief Marketing Officer of the Cavaliers, said in a statement.

“The opportunities for this innovative new technology are endless, and the variety is wide. What you see at the season opener is only the beginning. The best is yet to come.”
