CBS Launches TrainerPass, A Subscription Fitness Platform

CBS Interactive Advanced Media is hoping to help people workout anywhere and anytime with the launch of TrainerPass, a new subscription fitness platform that allows users to stream workout videos from fitness pros. TrainerPass can be found as an app for both iOS and Android, as well as on trainerpass.com.

There are two different subscriptions available that allow users to access all different types of workouts from all different types of trainers.  Some of the trainers available for download are FitNation by Matt Titus, Powerstrike founder Ilaria M., and A.R.T founder Terri Walsh, along with other fitness experts. The FlexPass subscription ($4.99 per month) gives users access to hundreds of videos from celebrity trainers along with workout programs like kickboxing and boot camp.

The Trainer Pass subscription ($6.99 per month) gives users complete access to a trainer’s workout library and nutrition tips. Vice President and General Manager of CBS Interactive Advanced Media has high hopes for the new program, “TrainerPass offers value to users looking to find their best exercise routine, and to trainers, who can interact with their current followers and expand their reach to a new audience.”

TrainerPass is unique in that it allows the trainers to manage their content, so their videos and uploads are always changing and updating. The trainers can also directly interact with their followers and change pricing depending on what a user may want.

TrainerPass is entering a large and rapidly growing market of online and fitness apps, but there is no telling how well it will do. In the past fitness apps have either soared or failed. One recent failure is NBC’s fitness service, Radius. It was a subscription based video service that had high hopes and good reviews when it debuted in 2014 in partnership with Under Armour. But it never caught on and its reasons for shutting down range from the competitiveness of the field to the low number of subscribers.

One of the biggest issues with these subscription services is that there are so many free fitness streaming sites or numerous videos available on Youtube. Only time will tell how CBS’s new fitness endeavor will do.
