Augmented Reality Sports Experiences Made Easy With Thyng’s ARKit-Based App

Developers at Thyng are making homemade augmented reality simple with its ARKit authoring app. The launch of Thyng 4.0 coincides with the recent release of Apple’s iOS 11, meaning anyone with an iPhone or iPad can create their own AR scenes with the ARKit platform.

Thyng’s app allows you to use your own personal photos and video. A drag-and-drop interface lets you easily to create your own virtual world. Say you were following the Chicago Cubs during their 2017 postseason run; simply drag and drop their logo onto the interface to create your own floating Cubbie banner.

“With Thyng 4.0, augmented reality can now be used for self-expression and for creating your own experiences,” Thyng CEO Ed LaHood said in a statement. “What better way to express yourself than by using your own photos and videos to create amazing augmented reality environments that can exist anywhere — in your home, outside, or anywhere you go!”

Thyng also allows the user to watch video within an AR environment. Catching up on game highlights? Video can be projected in AR giving users the ability to walk around and watch from any angle.

Thyng also creates an opportunity for teams and brands to execute target-based AR. This means a user scans an object which then produces a unique AR experience such as a video or image appearing on your screen.

And in version 4.2 of the app, transparent videos are supported to enable photorealistic animations to be placed in the world around you.

ARKit continues to be the most oft-used platform for companies looking to get into the AR space. In sports, the NBA has already launched an augmented reality game app using ARKit while Major League Baseball is using the platform to launch live stat overlays at games next season. Other notable examples are Triangle Factory’s H.O.R.S.E game and Mapbox.
