Augmented Audio Has Arrived For New York Mets, Cleveland Cavaliers

In a year where virtual reality has been all the rage in sports, augmented reality has taken a backseat in technology discussions. Yet, the New York Mets and Cleveland Cavaliers are two franchises placing their bets on the latter heading into 2017.

In a new partnership with three-year startup company, Doppler Labs, the Mets and Cavaliers will look to transform fans’ listening experience through the use of augmented audio.

The news comes on the same day the company announced on its blog that it would be delaying the shipment of its Here One wireless earbuds to consumers, the same product which will soon be available to fans at Citi Field and Quicken Loans Arena. Together, two wireless earbuds and a connected app will help enhance sports fans’ real-world audio experiences as they attend games at both venues.

At Quicken Loans, for example, Doppler Labs’ Here One proprietary Layered Listening technology will give individuals the ability to stream play-by-play commentary in real-time along with scores, statistics and player content, all over the sounds of the game. Additionally, with the assistance of Here One’s Smart Noise Filters, fans will be able to filter out crowd noise.

Similarly, at Citi Field, Here One and beacon technology will allows fans to receive real-time information, an audio feed and statistics on top of real-world sounds.

It is still to be determined when exactly the audio integrations will occur for both franchises, but according to today’s announcement — which included over a organizations partnering with Doppler Labs — it will be sometime in 2017.
