Webb set to join Toulon

Wales scrum-half Rhys Webb is set to depart Ospreys at the end of the season to join French giants Toulon on a three-year contract.

Webb's contract with the Welsh Rugby Union and Ospreys expires at the end of the year and according to the BBC, he will join European Rugby's glamour boys Toulon.

The big-spending Top 14 outfit, with wealthy French businessman Mourad Boudjellal at the helm, have previously recruited Wales duo Leigh Halfpenny and Gethin Jenkins.

Webb's pending departure will be a big blow for Ospreys following the news early last month that fly-half Dan Biggar would also be leaving the region to join Northampton Saints.

It may also represent a significant setback to Webb's international career as Welsh Rugby selection policy stipulates that only four players at clubs outside Wales may play for the national side.

And with Biggar, Liam Williams, Taulupe Faletau, George North and Jamie Roberts already plying their trade outside of the home union and with more internationals set to leave, Webb's chances are diminishing by the day.

Furthermore, the quota will drop to just two wildcard picks for the 2019/20 season which would see Webb's chances fade even further.

But the prospect of a big-money move to Toulon was too good to turn down for the 28-year-old, who was second-choice scrum-half in Warren Gatland's British and Irish Lions side that toured New Zealand.

Webb said: "It's a huge wrench to be leaving the Ospreys after spending all of my playing career with the team. I have made lifelong friends on and off the pitch and I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of the coaching team, players and all of the staff involved within the Ospreys organisation.

"I will continue to give the region everything I can to make sure we have the best season possible and I would like to conclude by saying a heartfelt thanks to everyone within the Region for helping me achieve my goals within rugby

"I would like to thank the WRU and the Ospreys for their efforts during this process."
