Sharks drop April for breaching team protocol

Sharks utility back Garth April was dropped from their side for Saturday's clash with Western Province at Newlands due to a disciplinary issue.

That was the word from Sharks head coach Robert du Preez who revealed that April was left out of their matchday squad for breaching team protocol.

Although the Sharks would not confirm the exact reason for April's absence, Du Preez said there is no guarantee that the 26-year-old would be available for selection for next weekend's encounter with the Free State Cheetahs in Durban.

"It will depend if he is prepared to come and speak to the team and to me," Du Preez told Sport24.

"Then we'll take it from there.

"It's very disappointing and it's unacceptable."

Du Preez said he expected more from a player of April's experience.

"This is not the first time it's happened," he added.

"It happened last year.

"I had a meeting with the leadership group of players and we jointly decided that he won't partake in this weekend's game."
