Shake-up for NZ Rugby constitution

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) is set to make changes to its constitution after the findings of a recent review into the culture of the sport were revealed.

An overwhelming majority of NZR board members voted on the changes – particularly to change the selection processes for board candidates.

Last month, the Respect and Responsibility Review released identified 36 cases of misconduct, including the mistreatment of a stripper hired for a Chiefs end-of-season party last year, and All Black Aaron Smith’s airport toilet sex incident.

The NZR board will in future consist of six appointed members and at least one woman will be on the Committee.

The changes aim to strengthen and future-proof the governance of rugby, the NZR said in a statement.

They want a broader set of candidates with a wider set of skills across the board’s membership.

“This is a major step forward in ensuring best practice governance processes are applied at the board level. The changes should lead to a wider range of board candidates with a greater range of skills and experiences represented at the top table in the future,” said NZR chairman Brent Impey.
