Rob Baxter backs Chiefs to respond

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter is confident his side will bounce back from their 27-10 Premiership final defeat to Saracens.

Baxter’s outfit finished top of the regular-season standings but ultimately lost the key game at Twickenham, going down to an in-form Saracens.

Following the defeat, Baxter revealed he was encouraged by his team’s reaction to the loss and believes his young side will respond next season.

“The most pleasing thing for me was the changing room felt a lot different to two years ago when we lost,” the boss told Premiership Rugby.

“In 2016, it felt okay to be there – it really did – but it didn’t feel a nice place this time and that’s not because the players are unaware they’ve had a good season.

“They know they’ve had a good season, they know they’ve achieved things this year that we’ve never done before as a side but it didn’t feel like a changing room that was happy, pleased or at the end of the journey.”

He added: “If I am really honest, the most pleasing thing for me moving forward is that we were on average the youngest Aviva Premiership Rugby team in the competition this year.

“We got to the final and finished top of the league – from a coaching perspective you have to be massively enthusiastic about that.

“We’ve got a to a final and had a tough experience but we’ve had a semi-final and came through that very well.

“We’ve still got a lot of players learning to become international and Premiership standard and not yet reaching that potential. We have to keep driving that as hard as we can.”
