Richards not getting ahead of himself

Newcastle boss Dean Richards was not looking to dwell on his side's top-of-the-table status with a trip to Exeter looming next week.

The Falcons cruised to their fourth win out of five Premiership games this season and the bonus point they attained against London Irish meant they went top of the table.

“We’ve won four out of five but we’ve got a big game next week and we know it’ll be a difficult game down there, then we go into Europe," Richards said.

“It’s a big challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it. We’ve taken a few knocks today but we’ll lick our wounds over the next 24 to 48 hours then see what the week brings.

“Patience and doing the simple things well are what we need to work on. When you look at Exeter it’s something they do incredibly well.

“They don’t deviate from that at all. They are probably the best side at sticking to their scripts right through the game from the start to the finish, I think that’s what makes them so good.

“Juan Pablo was good tonight but I thought Niki Goneva was outstanding on the day as well, and Callum Green has come through too.”

Meanwhile, London Irish coach Nick Kennedy at least can build on a strong second half showing from his charges.

“It was another frustrating start for us, missed tackles resulted in two tries again, but I was pleased with the effort and the way we came out in the second half," Kennedy said.

“We stuck to our game plan, we looked after the ball better and we could have had three tries in the second half.

“I’m pleased with the boys’ effort; it was our fourth week in a row that we’ve given ourselves a mountain to climb.

“We had a slightly better start but let them into it with some missed tackles – you have to give them credit, Dave Walder has done a brilliant job here with their attack.

“We’re all very positive guys so we’ll stay positive, we’ll take a lot of positives from the second half. We need to be more clinical and keep working on our defence.”
