Following the first loss of his Glasgow Warriors tenure, Dave Rennie has praised Exeter Chiefs’ execution of their game plan during his side’s 24-15 loss.
With the score 17-15 for a long period of the second half, Exeter pushed over their third close range try with two minutes to go meaning the Warriors left Sandy Park empty handed.
“We’re not frustrated to have missed out on a losing bonus point we’re frustrated not to have won the game,” said Glasgow’s head coach.
“It was an arm wrestle at 17-15 and we had a few opportunities in their territory but we didn’t hang on to enough ball or build enough pressure.
“Their kicking game shaded ours and they ended up winning the territory battle. We found a little bit of space down the flanks but they came into the game with a very clear game plan and executed it well.”
The Glasgow squad travelled back from South Africa last weekend following their PRO14 victory over the Cheetahs but Rennie said that the extra travel is nothing to do with his side’s defeat in Devon.
“We knew about the draw months ago, were not using the travel as an excuse,” he explained.
“The boys who travelled had an extra rest.
“We prepared really well this week. There’s no excuses around the schedule, it is what it is and you’ve just got to get on with it.”
Attention now shifts to Leinster at a sold out Scotstoun stadium next weekend and Rennie says is squad doesn’t feel any more pressure having lost their opening tie.
“The Leinster game was always a must win regardless of the result v Exeter,” added Rennie.
“All of our home games in this competition are must wins.
“It’s disappointing not to get anything from the game but the boys showed good effort out there. Yes, next week is important but there won’t be any issues about getting back up for the Leinster game.”
