Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie paid tribute to both teams after his side’s 37-21 victory over Treviso at Scotstoun, a result which sees Glasgow retain their place on top of Conference A.
Having crossed for the all-important fourth try in the final play of the game, the home side ensured that they would take maximum points from the encounter, a fact which pleased Rennie.
“The win was the main objective tonight,” said Rennie.
“We wanted to grab the full five points, but we knew we’d have to fight for it. Treviso have been excellent over the past few weeks, so we got what we expected from them.
“I thought we should have maybe kicked a bit more to try and negate their line speed. When we did that, we profited, but we’ll have learnt from that tonight. A lack of discipline late on gave them a chance to put us in the corner and it’s important we work on that before next week, because the Cheetahs are very strong in that area.”
Rennie also praised the character shown by his side, with the Warriors weathering sustained pressure from the visitors before retaining possession well into injury time in pursuit of the bonus-point.
Highlighting the work done during the week, he said: “I’ve seen these boys play a lot of footy, but there’s nothing like being immersed in it. I’ve been really impressed by the boys – they’re working really hard and there’s a lot of attention to detail.
“We’re having one-to-ones each week and the boys want to get better. We probably didn’t have the same intensity as last week, but the guys fronted up really well. I thought they showed good patience and composure after multiple scrums and just trying to squeeze them down there.
“I’m pleased with that – it’s good to grab that extra point in such a tight competition, and we need to take what’s on offer.”
The Warriors now travel to South Africa for the first time in the new PRO14, with the Cheetahs lying in wait this coming Friday. A familiar foe during his time in charge of the Chiefs, Rennie is looking forward to the upcoming trip to the Free State.
“I’ve been out there eight times in the past six years, so I’m familiar with Bloemfontein,” said Rennie.
“The boys will enjoy it – it’s a chance for us to spend a lot of time together over the next week and get tighter as a group, which will be great preparation as we head into Europe after next week.
“I know what to expect from the Cheetahs. They’ve got some massive men and are pretty innovative from lineouts, so discipline is going to be key because we don’t want to be put in a corner against them. We’ll be keen to play though, and hopefully we’ll get the conditions to allow us to do that.”
