O’Connor relieved with losing bonus point

Leicester Tigers head coach Matt O’Connor says it may be crucial to have secured the losing bonus point against Racing 92 on Saturday.

The Tigers lost 22-18 in their opening European Champions Cup clash. Tries from Luke Hamilton and Jonny May helped them gain that losing bonus point, and O’Connor said it may prove pivotal at the end of the group stage.

“The reality is that by the time you get to rounds five and six, that point is going to be important,” O’Connor explained.

“If we’d come away empty-handed it would have been a wasted afternoon. Thankfully, we got a point out of it, you stay alive in the group.”

Despite appreciating the point gained, he admitted Tigers weren’t good enough on the day to win the match.

“It’s certainly a fair result,” added O’Connor.

“There’s a lot of disappointment in the changing room, but we haven’t got a lot to complain about, (Racing) were a little bit better.”

Leicester will host Castres Olympique at Welford Road next Saturday.
