O’Connor relieved to get first win

Leicester director of rugby Matt O’Connor was relieved after his side finally got on the board in the Premiership with a win over Gloucester.

The 24-10 victory at Welford Road saw Ben Youngs score a double while Nick Malouf added another, ending a two-game losing run in 2017/18.

“The main reaction is probably relief. You are never happy with the performance. To do what we did without any line-out ball is pretty impressive,” O’Connor told Premiership Rugby after their triumph in front of their passionate fans.

“There are not many teams in the league that could malfunction at line-outs but still come away with the points and put yourself in a position to probably get a bonus point.

“There are a lot of positives in that and a huge amount of growth in us at the same time.”

Meanwhile, Gloucester lock Ed Slater, who was facing his old side, admitted the Cherry and Whites were consistent enough in the game.

“There was a good fight from us in the second-half but we don’t want to be saying that every week,” he said.

“We want to be talking about a good 80-minute performance.

“You can see that the makings are there of a team that can pull out some good results if we play constantly for 80 minutes.”
