McGeechan collapses at Westpac Stadium

British & Irish Lions legend Sir Ian McGeechan has been admitted to hospital after collapsing at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

The former Lions coach and player fainted just before 4pm local time but was able to walk himself to the ambulance before being transferred to hospital, according to the New Zealand Herald.

He had been suffering from a “bug” for the last few days, a New Zealand Rugby spokesperson said.

It was “not entirely clear” if that was a factor in his collapse, she said.

He was in attendance at Westpac Stadium ahead of the Lions’ second Test against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Westpac Stadium chief executive Shane Harman described McGeechan’s condition as “okay” and a spokesman for the Capital and Coast District Health Board said the Lions great was stable in hospital.
