Marx rewarded with new contract – report

Springbok and Lions hooker Malcolm Marx has reportedly put pen to paper on a contract extension with SA Rugby until at least 2020.

According to Netwerk24, Marx signed the deal on Sunday morning, which was in part a reward from SA Rugby following his heroics against the All Blacks at Newlands on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was South Africa’s highest-rated player in their 25-24 defeat to New Zealand.

Marx put in a huge effort on defence and was highly effective with ball in hand. He also won several penalties at the breakdown at critical times to bail out the Springboks from tricky situations on countless occasions.

His lineout throwing, which has been criticised lately, was far more accurate which saw the Boks win 13 of 14 of their own lineouts.

Even though All Black full-back Damian McKenzie walked away with the official man-of-the-match accolade, many pundits felt Marx deserved the award, with a New Zealand website going as far as giving the Bok hooker a perfect 10 out of 10 in their ratings.
