Marler ban reduced

Harlequins has successfully appealed against the independent Disciplinary Committee’s three-week suspension of prop Joe Marler.

The 27-year-old was banned after pleading guilty to striking Wasps lock Will Rowlands during Sunday’s 41-10 loss in the Champions Cup.

The suspension would have ruled the England international out until Sunday, 19 November meaning he would miss the Tests against Argentina and Australia. However, Marler is now expected to be available for the Australia Test after the decision to spread his three-week ban for striking over an elongated period was queried, meaning the ban will be lifted on November 12.

The front-row forward was omitted from head coach Eddie Jones’s 34-man squad, which was announced on Thursday.

However, Jones has confirmed he has the ability to draft players into the squad at any stage during the campaign.

Harlequins argued that there had not been a consistency of approach to the issue of a player’s potential selection in the England Squad and its effect on any sanction imposed.
