Mallinder not getting carried away

Northampton Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder is not resting on his laurels following his side's 30-22 victory over Harlequins at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.

The Saints top the Premiership table with four wins on the bounce including three bonus points.

“[Top of the table] is a nice place to be but we won’t be satisfied with that because it’s just a position," Mallinder said after the game.

“We’ve got lots of things to work on because that’s not championship-winning form, but it was winning form, which was good.

“Some of our receiving from kick-off needs to be looked at because every time they kicked to us, we seemed to lose the ball and they seemed to score, so that’s an obvious point where we can improve.

“We talked about them liking a loose, fast game and we just gave them a bit too much.”

Meanwhile, Harlequins director of rugby John Kingston has bemoaned his side's injury problems as well as the fact that their disclipline let them down.

“It’s well-documented, the background with which we were coming into this game – 22 or 23 players unavailable – and the easiest thing in the world is then to say we got so close with a group where four players are making their debuts," Kingston said.

“But we’re aspiring to reach the top and if we’re aspiring to reach the top, we need to understand what we got wrong on the day.

“We didn’t take our chances. [We gave away] a couple of soft tries and defensively, at times, we were giving away penalties that we’re necessary.

“In the end, it’s probably been the difference between us coming away with a win which I think was probably there for us, frankly.”
