John Barclay goes under the knife

Edinburgh-bound John Barclay underwent surgery on Monday for a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained in Scarlets’ PRO14 semi-final win over his former club Glasgow Warriors.

Together, the Scottish Rugby Union and Edinburgh have made arrangements for Barclay to begin his recovery and rehabilitation in Edinburgh.

The injury will keep the Scottish captain out for a minimum of six months and obviously means he will miss Scarlets’ PRO14 final clash with Leinster this coming weekend.

It is anticipated that the Scotland captain will be out for at least six months.

Edinburgh Head Coach Richard Cockerill said: “It’s naturally disappointing to lose one of our key summer signings through injury but I’m more disappointed for the player as I know how much he was looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season.

“We’re still looking forward to welcoming a man of John’s calibre into the group this summer where I know he will help build on the culture and environment that we established last season.”
