Gold picky over fly-half

Worcester chairman Bill Bolsover says coach Gary Gold has walked away from a couple of signings as he seeks to recruit a new fly-half.

Gold has expressed his desire to bring in a world-class number 10 ahead of the 2017-2018 Premiership campaign.

South African pivot Morne Steyn is reportedly at the top of Gold's wishlist as he has been heavily linked with a move away from Stade Français.

But chairman Bill Bolsover revealed Gold has not acquired his prized target and in fact had turned down chances to bolster the fly-half department.

Bolsover, who is in charge of financial matters at Worcester, also expressed his belief that ,should they not get their man, they have more than enough options as it is.

“We haven’t (signed a new fly-half) but we have looked at people and have walked away from one or two,” Bolsover told Worcester News.

“You have got to remember we can look at (Tom) Heathcote, (Ryan) Mills, the new guy (Sam) Olver and (Jamie) Shillcock.

“We have actually got four 10s and I believe out of those you have got potential England players in there.”

Mills rose to the top of the pecking order at the back-end of last term, amassing 121 points in 29 appearances and was rewarded with an England call-up by Eddie Jones for the tour to Argentina.

Gold has also recruited 22-year-old Olver from Northampton Saints and despite boasting many options, Bolsover said: “It would be nice if we could bring in another 10 who had experience for the next year-and-a-half and could actually shield those guys.

"But I think you’ll find those four we have got are going to be really useful next season.

“I think they (the fans) will be eager for someone (a fly-half) to come in but we have brought in a lot of people."
