Flannery praises Munster attitude

Munster forwards coach Jerry Flannery has praised his players for how they have dealt with the sad passing of Anthony Foley on the field.

The Irish province are preparing for this weekend’s Champions Cup quarter-final against Toulouse as their season hits a crucial period.

It looked like being a poor campaign early on and when Foley died in Paris before the Racing 92 game, they were emotionally in pieces.

But somehow Munster have bounced back and are now one game away from a European semi-final, with Flannery proud of his players.

“If you ask me if I am surprised by the way the players have responded to Axel then the answer is 100 per cent,” he told Sky Sports.

“You never envisage something like this happening but if you ask me what it the most important thing I look for in a player I would say attitude. If a player has got attitude then we can work with everything else.

“You cannot string consistent results together just on emotion so there has to be a plan behind it.”

He added: “If you look at the Glasgow game it shows that there is an insane level of mental strength there – you have to attribute that to Axel.”

But he’s not getting carried away ahead of the Thomond Park clash as he knows Munster are not entitled to get their hands on the Cup.

“Undoubtedly we could win it but we are far from being favourites,” he added.

“Being underdogs can help you and maybe that is the journey this team has to go through. But there comes a stage where being successful means that you have to deal with being favourites.”
