Denton calls for improvement from Worcester

Worcester back-row David Denton feels their performances have not been good enough this season and has called for an improved effort from his team-mates.

Denton wants the Warriors, who are the Premiership’s bottom side after four matches, to go full throttle when they host Saracens on Friday night at Sixways.

The 27-year-old believes the Warriors should not have suffered a 24-19 defeat to Gloucester last weekend and although they fought back, after trailing 24-6 at one stage in that match, Denton does not like to be labelled a ‘gallant loser’.

Denton also insists Worcester cannot afford to enter the upcoming break for Europe club competition fixtures with a solitary point in the Premiership standings.

“It was four points lost (against Gloucester). We kept giving ourselves too much to do and to be honest we should’ve won it at the end. It was within our grasp,”he told the Worcester Observer.

“There’s absolutely no doubt we played very well in the second half and genuinely competed like a team that can compete against a lot of the teams in this competition, but it’s not good enough. We aspire to be better than that. We’re not here to be gallant losers; we’d rather play badly and win.

“At the end of the day we’re in the business of winning and it’s about time we as a club take that next step.

“We’ve started slow in every game this season and have given ourselves so much to do.

“We need to come out the blocks firing against Saracens. They won’t underestimate us so we have to be prepared for a big battle.

“It’s such an important match as we can’t afford to go into the European break with one point.”
