Wasps were dealt a blow when it was revealed that their first-choice fly-half, Danny Cipriani, will be sidelined for up to three months with a knee injury.
The England international sustained a medial ligament tear in his side’s 24-21 loss against Harlequins on Sunday and saw a specialist on Tuesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, it is anticipated that he will be out for approximately eight to 12 weeks.
Meanwhile, utility back Jimmy Gopperth is back in full training after being rested last week as a precaution due to an ankle knock.
In other injury news, back-row Alex Rieder dislocated his shoulder in the game against Harlequins, which requires an operation and is unfortunately expected to be out for around four months.
Fellow loose forwardGuy Thompson picked up a dead leg in that clash and is expected back in training within the next week while another back-row, Thomas Young, is back in contention following a calf tear during pre-season.
Second-row Matt Symons, who was a late withdrawal from Sunday’s game due to illness, is back in training. Utlity forward James Gaskell is likely to be side-lined for around three to four weeks with a hamstring injury incurred a couple of weeks ago, while another lock, Kearnan Myall, is expected to be kept out by an ankle injury for around 8-10 weeks
Scrum-half Dan Robson is hoped to return in the next couple of weeks from the knee injury picked up against Worcester.
Wasps’ director of rugby Dai Young said: “It’s obviously not ideal to be without some of our key players, but it’s likely to happen to a number of clubs at some stage during the season.
“Unfortunately, we’ve picked up a few injuries early doors which is obviously going to stretch us, but we just need to deal with that. We have a strong squad and that’s what building quality throughout the squad is for. Players will get an opportunity to show what they can do and we have a few guys coming back from injury as well, so it will be up to those players to take the opportunities.”
“You feel for the players who have picked up injuries, particularly those who look like they will be out for a few weeks when they’ve been playing well in the opening part of the season. They will be working hard with our physios to make sure they rehab in the best way possible to come back in good shape as soon as they are ready.”
