Blitzbokke clinch Sevens Series title

South Africa clinched the World Rugby Sevens Series a round early following England’s semi-final exit in Paris.

The result, a 19-17 defeat for England to Scotland, means that the Blitzbokke cannot be caught at the top of the Series standings with one round of the competition still to come in London.

South Africa were stunned on the opening day of the Paris Sevens by fellow finalists Scotland, but rebounded to qualify for the final after defeating New Zealand in the final four, before going on to win their fifth title of the Series.

A brilliant Series for South Africa saw Neil Powell’s side clinch titles in Dubai, Wellington, Sydney, Las Vegas and now Paris.

Powell was relieved to finally secure the title: “It’s been an incredible season so far. We wanted to finish strong in this tournament and in London next week. This is for all the people in the system, not just the players, but the management back at home as well for really working hard back to make it happen.

“Everytime we put our jerseys on our backs we play for South Africa, for our family and our people back home that support us. It’s special for us. We want to say thanks to them for supporting us all year.”
