1872 Cup battle excites Townsend

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend has rallied his team’s supporters ahead of their derby showdown with Edinburgh on Saturday.

With Glasgow unable to make the PRO12 play-offs, pride is on the line at Scotstoun along with the 1872 Cup in what will be Townsend’s last game at the helm.

He is eager to sign off with a win and wants the fans to create a special atmosphere as they look to bounce back from defeat to Leinster.

“We love playing at Scotstoun, there is something special about playing at home and we know what this game means to our supporters,” he told Glasgow’s website.

“It’ll be a special occasion and for it to be the 1872 Cup just makes it even bigger. It’ll be a great week with everyone pushing for selection.”

He added on the loss at the RDS: “The players were really disappointed on Friday. Disappointed that they didn’t play their best and when they put so much effort in and didn’t get the win it’s tough.

“They will change that disappointment into desire to play really well in their last game together as a team.

“Obviously we want to put our best team out there and win so there will be a few disappointed people but they will get behind the team like they always do and we will give it everything.”

Townsend will move into the Scotland hotseat after this game but he was quick to deflect the spotlight onto players who will also move on.

“It the last game for a number of people. Not all of them will be involved in the game but they will be there,” he added.

“It will be great to see our supporters show their gratitude for what these players have contributed to the club over the last couple of years.

“The team will be different next year, there will be people leaving who will be playing and it’s important that we finish the season showing what we are capable of.”
